After years of hype, PCI Express now seems poised to make major inroads among embedded systems and networking OEM vendors. Timed for the Intel Developer Forum just concluded in San Francisco, August saw many major announcements in the PCI Express space. PICMG, for example, approved a new 'EXP.O' standard, synergizing PCI Express and the successful CompactPCI standard. The specification defines the system slot and board to have up to 24 lanes and up to four links of PCI Express for up to 6 Gigabytes/second system bandwidth per direction. Type 1 peripheral slots and boards can have up to 16 lanes of PCI Express for up to 4 Gigabytes/second bandwidth per direction and Type 2 peripheral slots can have up to 8 lanes of PCI Express for up to 2 Gigabytes/second bandwidth per direction. Information here.
In addition, the PXI standard is also being improved by enhancing it with PCI Express. With the new PXI Express, engineers and scientists can achieve bandwidth of up to 6 GBytes/s per system and 45 times improvement compared to traditional PXI systems, while preserving both software and hardware compatibility with more than 1,150 existing PXI products. Release here.
Recent important PCI Express-related announcements include:
If you have more interest in PCI Express and other interconnects, don't miss two important recents surveys. These are first, the joint eg3.com/VDC survey on 'Switch Fabrics,' here, and second, the recent EE Times survey on 'Industry Challenges,' here.

multi-core and more: high-end embedded mpu's

Intel attempted to shock the world with its 'multi-core intentions,' highlighted at its Developer Forum (announcement, here), but the real issue for embedded systems designers is how these new high performance architectures will filter down to the embedded space. But whereas Intel seems to have forgotten the value of embedded processors, competitor AMD is aggressively moving to couple its high-end Opteron with the longevity needs of embedded. The Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor Models 165, 265 and 865, as well as the lower-power 55 watt version of each, are planned to be available for five years, allowing embedded designers to enjoy the performance of true x86 dual-core technology in thermal and power envelopes that these markets demand. Release here.
All this focus on 'multi core' is ironic, of course, to the many embedded/SOC designers who have struggled for years with multi core intellectual property complexities. Indeed, a recent In-Stat study concludes that the movement to 'multi-core' could be highly disruptive to the embedded networking market. (Announcement here). Similarly, Semico Research announced that Intellectual Property should be the next "major disruption" in the ASIC/SOC/Chips market. (Release here). And the movement to even more complex system-on-chip, IP, multi-core designs foreshadows a deepening need for better design methodologies. Witness Celoxica's just released study on System Design Trends, which highlights the increasing interest in FPGAs (vs. ASICs) and 'high-level languages' like SystemC (vs. HDLs). The excellent survey and analysis can be found here.
