Each month, the eg3.com editorial staff attend trade shows, browse the web, and converse with tens to hundreds of vendors, consortia, and other 'stakeholders' to identify the month's top stories - focused specifically on designers of electronic products. This month we focus on network convergence as well as network protocol analysis.

QNX Software Systems Featured White Paper: OS Partitioning for Embedded Systems
-
Embedded systems need to be secure, connected, and upgradable; they must also deliver fast, predictable response times under all operating scenarios, including failure conditions and system upgrades. With guaranteed CPU cycles, Adaptive Partitioning addresses these challenges even when the system experiences a heavy processing load or a denial-of-service attack. Download this white paper today!

What will traverse the emerging all digital network? Voice and data are surely converging, witness VoIP, but other intriguing applications are being invented as well.
Video surveillance, for example, is a sure winner after 9/11. Consider Cradle Technologies, a company that specializes in multi-core DSP for any embedded video application, especially surveillance. Check out their application news release of ten different versions of DVR and IP video-server product lines. Another company to watch is ObjectVideo.
The new DaVinci Platform from Texas Instruments hopes to expand digital video into new applications. Supported by Green Hills Software with development tools and MontaVista with Linux, DaVinci hopes to make multimedia video easier to design: video surveillance, multimedia phones, telematics, digital cameras, consumer Wi-Fi and more. Don't miss the upcoming free seminars.
Machine vision is an established video application. At issue is the intelligence of the device or data acquisition point, the speed of the network, and the processing power of the backend server. All three are improving. National Instruments, for example, just released an expanded line of PCI Express frame grabbers. Using PCI Express, the NI PCIe-1430 board can acquire images from two Camera Link cameras at speeds up to 255 MB/s and clock rates up to 85 MHz, the maximum defined by Camera Link. Release here.
Similarly, VMETRO released CAML-MOD3, a CameraLink adapter module for VMETRO’s high performance Xilinx Virtex II Pro based PMC-FPGA03 PMC module. Capable of capturing video from two base-mode cameras or one Base, Medium or Full mode camera, the CAML-MOD3 / PMC-FPGA03 combination can be used to implement functions such as edge detection, FFTs, digital filtering and correlation to benefit applications including target tracking, feature recognition or real-time filtering. Release here.

One key network architecture facilitating digital and multimedia video is, of course, PCI Express, now entering its 'take off' phase from the PC space into the embedded and networking areas. Altera and TI thus announced a new PCI Express development kit available for easy order. Vmetro has showcased its Vanguard Express line. Useful for debugging, testing and validating the PCI Express protocol, the Vanguard Express analyzer allows testing of x1, x4 and x8 PCI Express card-edge and XMC form factors. More information here. And, PLX Technology has announced a PCIe
design contest, giving engineers a chance at the $1500 prize.
Here is a list of important network protocol and/or bus analyzer testing vendors:
Finally, one of the oldest yet still exciting convergence areas in networking is voice over ip. Don't miss Adaptive Digital's Open Source G.Pak. The product is a time-to-market saver that simplies getting a VoIP design started and running in one easy-to-use package. Cool.
