The miracle of the mobile phone depends on so many variables - the backend telecommunications servers, the network, the handset, the variations in local geography... Much work and much buzz focuses on handset design, but a few companies have ventured new products that focus on testing the mobile experience from end to end. TestQuest, for example, has just introduced TestQuest CountDown. The product targets three basic groups involved in mobile design - device manufacturers, network operators and/or application developers - and allows them to test devices across geographically disperse environments and teams. This is critical since mobile devices are, well, mobile. (Release here).
Another example of new mobile/wireless test comes from Ixia, a provider of IP performance test systems. It announced new capabilities for its Optixia hardware platform, which can emulate virtual 'countries' of web users, more than 40 million, connecting at the rate of over 1.5 million users per second; virtual 'cities' of voice callers, making more than 60,000 simultaneous calls; and virtual 'towns' of video subscribers, receiving more than 30,000 standard definition video streams - all from a single Optixia chassis. Release here.
On the application development front, more and more companies are trying to make it easier for application development:
Finally, don't miss Lantronix's 2nd Annual Wireless Design Contest. It challenges you to wirelessly network-enable a machine or device using Lantronix WiPort, an embedded 802.11 b/g wireless Device Server. Details here.

A critical part of the so-called 'triple play,' is TV, whether digital or IPTV, or both. eg3.com tracks IPTV - white papers, demo's, and more. While you might not be involved in direct IPTV deployment, it is part of the larger world of 'digital video' which may ultimately land in more embedded designs than one would think.
Infonetics Research which tracks IPTV issued a survey in late August indicating that revenue generated from mobile video services around the world is set to skyrocket from $46.2 million in 2005 to $5.6 billion in 2009, a staggering 11,997% jump in 5 years. (Release here) So IPTV is hot - witness the explosion of news, new products, shows, and research reports on the topic.
As in the whole mobile/wireless experience, device and deployment testing are critical. Hence, Tektronix, a leader in the test space, announced the availability of Spectra2|VQM (Video Quality Measurement) version 2.0 for the diagnosis and analysis of Internet Protocol TV (IPTV). "Network operators and NEMs need the right expertise and tools to test their IP video service offerings and equipment under real-world conditions, where timeliness and quality are the keys to winning over customers," said Richard Kenedi, Senior Director, Diagnostics, Communications Business, Tektronix. (Release here.)
Similarly, Telchemy released their DVQattest/RE active test system, giving service providers essential visibility into service quality problems for the fast growing residential VoIP and IPTV market. (Release here.) Similarly, Ixia released Aptixia IxLoad 3.10, capable of assessing all aspects of IPTV service infrastructure to ensure subscribers' Quality of Experience (QoE). (Release here.)
Two of the best ways to watch the emerging IPTV market are MRG Multimedia Research Group and Heavy Reading.com - see their study on China IPTV, for example.
