If they gave awards for most visionary interviews, it would go to Neil Henderson of Mentor Graphics, Embedded Software Division. The hard-hitting Henderson outlined a new vision for RTOS / embedded software companies of going beyond the operating system into elements like TCP/IP stacks, other network protocols, file systems, and especially graphical user interfaces. To that end, his company announced a new low price of $2995 for a bundled version of its EDGE Development Tools, including integrated development environment (IDE), software simulator, compiler and debugger. Release (here). And he promised a big movement of Mentor Graphics into the embedded middleware space, soon.
"Middleware" was the vendor buzz of ESC software. Enea, for example, announced version 2.0 of their Element high availability middleware, focused on telecommunications infrastructure and especially useful in multi-OS systems (Release here). Another vendor with middleware buzz was Micrium, which announced a 45 day free evaluation of their uC/TCP-IP stack including source code. Two aspects are interesting: 1) the TCP-IP stack is optimized for embedded systems and built "from scratch" with clean, readable code, and 2) the download is a full version. (Release here).
Other middleware announcements included:
While wrapping your brain around the transition to middleware, check out Real-Time Innovations (RTI). The company bills itself as "The Real-time Middleware Company" and focuses on Data-Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS). RTI is in an ideal position as (tele)communications networking converges with data networking, and data networking requires higher and more reliable standards of quality (QoS). Check out their intriguing ESC announcements, here.

make vs. buy in embedded boards

To make or to buy? And if to buy, from whom? The Internet and globalization are allowing more choices in the board marketplace. Consider, for example, Meritronics. This start-up from China can produce a small "prototyping" run of 5-10 boards or a mega run of many thousands; you simply send them a Gerber file along with your bill-of-materials.
Among more major companies, Advantech sees a big future in made-to-order boards. The company announced its "DTOS" (Design to Order Services), wherein you can choose from a completely scratch board or from among various pre-selected modules. Again, the beauty is you can choose a board that exactly matches your requirements. Check it out here.
Or, you can go to an established board vendor. These offer a bewildering array of board choices, speeding your time to market with pre-built choices. VersaLogic, for example, focused on software (Linux and bios) in its quest to make it easy for developers. The company announced a new Linux support package for its Pentium M-powered EBX single board computer (Cobra), here), plus a bios power-saving innovation called "Suspend-to-RAM," here.
WinSystems focused on extended temperature (-40 to +70 C) range by announcing their EBC-855-G, an EBX-compatible, Intel 1GHz ultra low-power, Celeron® (Dothan core) single board computer (SBC); price $595. Announcement here. And IEI Technology Corp. emphasized it complete line of RoHS-compliant boards for those struggling with this important transition, here, as well as a nifty man-machine interface, Windows CE gui, here.

wireless, usb, ethernet - quick & easy

Many board vendors focused on connectivity, especially chips, modules, or very small boards that you can purchase to quickly and easily add Internet, wireless, and/or ethernet connectivity to your design. Rabbit Semiconductor got on the Zigbee bandwagon with its new ZigBee/802.15.4 Application Kit. The application kit interfaces a RabbitCore module with MaxStream XBee wireless ZigBee modules, here.
FTDI focuses on converting legacy peripherals to USB. Previously focused on the client side, the company announced an aggressive effort at the host side of USB, here.
Beyond Zigbee, beyond USB, many want to add 802.11 to their designs. Lantronix stands ready with a full portfolio of 802.11 modules (and some cool 802.11 design contests) as well as its WiBox® wireless Device Server. Multi-Tech focused, in contrast, on making it easy to add ethernet to IP networks, here.
Beyond boards, Quadros announced the availabilty of its Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) connectivity software suite. The solution allows off-the-shelf USB- and SDIO-based hardware, originally designed for PCs and consumer devices, to be easily integrated into existing embedded systems. Many designs are not high-volume enough to justify customized hardware, and the Quadros solution is to make it easy to use PC / Consumer 802.11 add-ons in the embedded space. Announcement, here
