USB adds quick and easy connectivity to devices - both wired, and wireless. It is an almost universal requirement for many of today's embedded systems. But how do you add USB to your device? Solutions abound, so this month, we highlight new options and key USB resources. In addition, eg3.com has begun keyword coverage on technologies like VPX, EBX, motor control, and protocol testing - so we take a moment to explain them as well as how to update your e-clips alerts.

Extreme Temperature Single Board Computer, Ideal for Harsh Environments
-
Advantech’s PC/104-Plus CPU Module, PCM-4153, features AMD LX800 and withstands temperatures from -40 ~ +85° C. This board is part of Advantech’s new ETT (Extended Temperature Testing) solution known as "Phoebus Design," which involves designing a platform and pre-qualifying all onboard components to operate without failure in extreme temperature conditions. Phoebus Design provides 32-hour testing between -40 and 85° C to bring a new dimension to extreme temperature platforms

USB or Universal Serial Bus - both wired and wireless - has become an all but universal requirement for many embedded systems. One way to quickly add USB is to purchase an "add-on module." Consider, for example, Future Technology Devices International Ltd. (FTDI), one company specializing in USB add-on modules that easily convert legacy busses (usually serial) to USB. Their flagship product is Vinculum.
Many chip makers have also sought to simplify USB design. STMicroelectronics, for example, just announced a USB software Developer Kit for their STR7 and STR9 microcontroller families (here), and Maxim announced "USB Laboratory" - a MAX3421E-/MAX3420E-based USB development system using an ARM7 processor and example software. The laboratory has both a USB host and USB peripheral implemented in the same ARM C code. This approach allows development and study of USB peripherals and embedded USB hosts with the advantage of having a reference device at the other end of the USB cable, all in the same C code.
Release here.
A great example of why USB is so popular comes from Mentor Graphics. That company announced a new class driver for the Nucleus USB software, supporting their Nucleus Operating System (OS). This upgrade allows easier "field upgradeability" of devices, allowing manufacturers to extend product lifespans and minimize recalls. Information here. Finally, Mentor also has just launched a new initiative towards "subsystem intellectual property (IP)," beginning with the industry’s first USB subsystem solution from a single-source EDA provider. "As the only EDA company to offer all three technologies - digital, analog and embedded software IP," said Bill Martin, Mentor Graphics IP Division general manager, "we enable our customers to save critical time and resources with a fully-integrated and verified IP block. Our complete USB Subsystem IP solution removes hidden costs for customers who are faced with the complexities of hardware and software design integration." Release here.
