Al Gore. The OC Choppers. Hundreds of sessions. Key vendors. The just-concluded Embedded Systems Conference, San Jose, was an information junkie's dream (or nightmare). Thankfully, eg3.com's show coverage is the next best thing to being there - don't miss our full index to all participating companies and all news @ www.eg3.com/embshow.

Extreme Temperature Single Board Computer, Ideal for Harsh Environments
-
Advantech’s PC/104-Plus CPU Module, PCM-4153, features AMD LX800 and withstands temperatures from -40 ~ +85° C. This board is part of Advantech’s new ETT (Extended Temperature Testing) solution known as "Phoebus Design," which involves designing a platform and pre-qualifying all onboard components to operate without failure in extreme temperature conditions. Phoebus Design provides 32-hour testing between -40 and 85° C to bring a new dimension to extreme temperature platforms

While Al Gore worries about the fate of the planet, we worry about the fate of embedded software. Projects are late, often cancelled, and tangled in a web of hardware and software complexities that make "global warming" look like a children's sudoku. Here are what some key vendors are doing in the software space.
Telelogic, long a leader in SDL, UML, and Object-oriented methods, sought to co-opt the many developers and managers who want to begin embedded projects quickly, without lengthy "formal methods" yet reap the benefits of model-driven design. The solution? Rhapsody® 7.1, with support for Agile Software Development. Just start coding, and the new Rhapsody aims to take the results from an agile process and conclude with rigorous documentation and methodology.
RoweBots debuted at the show with iZoom!,
a software development platform with an integrated editor, compiler, builder, debugger, reference books and support for hosted development on Windows, Linux and Solaris. The product is ideally suited to host based algorithm development and testing for embedded systems. The company also offers DSPnano, an operating system targeting signal processing. News from RoweBots, here and here.
Java has long hoped to ease the pain of embedded software, but has been criticized as too bloated for lean embedded projects. Not any more, argues Aonix. The company showcased PERC Pico, the first development environment for Java developers truly geared toward the creation of resource-constrained and deeply embedded hard real-time applications and components. Its argument is that an all Java code solution using PERC Pico is 2x faster than Java with C. More information, here and a special website, here.

The curious thing about hardware at this year's conference was that even for hardware, it was often all about software. VersaLogic, for example, showcased a new Puma PC/104-Plus Windows CE Board Support Package (BSP). Used with Microsoft's Platform Builder 5.0, the BSP allows developers to configure their systems quickly and develop applications in a shorter time frame. It also provides support for basic functions including Ethernet, audio, video, USB ports, etc. Release here.
Telelogic, coupled their Rhapsody announcement with a release of SDL Suite 6.0, with many new features targeted specifically at telecommunications. Release here. GE Fanuc announced their Neternity line of embedded switches and concurrently their OpenWare switch management environment. OpenWare is portable across switch fabrics and processor environments, and easy to customize using the familiar Linux command line interface. Release here.
Don't miss Micrium's foray into dynamic code analysis, uC/Probe-STD. While most alternatives require that you "stop" an application for debugging, this new product allows a dynamic analysis, ideal for complex systems such as automotive or process control. Available first for ARM targets, it uses a J-Tag interface for data collection. Priced at less than $495.00 with a free online demo, the product addresses the needs (and budgets) of a vast pool of embedded developers. Details, here.
The Rabbit, Digi International, and MaxStream family of companies introduced many new modules to make "wireless easy" as well as hooking into both their own software and that of Microsoft .Net:
If you are interested in Microsoft .NET, the JumpStart Kit is a really exciting starting point. It builds upon Microsoft's February announcement of the .NET Micro Framework SDK, here.
