e-clips: embedded linux, mobile devices, infrastructure ...
Linux, Linux, everywhere. If you attended the recent LinuxWorld, or almost any Linux gathering for that matter, you might think that a penguin can thrive in any ecosystem, anywhere. The truth, of course, is that penguins do better in some climes than in others. This month we look at Linux's newest target - mobile devices, especially phones - as well as Linux-related news in the network / telecom infrastructure, an area in which Linux has thrived. For your next embedded OS, Linux is definitely worth a look. Here's what's new.

embedded linux - the mobile environment
Linux, of course, was not originally created for the resource-constrained world of mobile devices and cell phones. But more and more device makers (think "smart phone") are taking a serious look at Linux. Accordingly, the hardware and software vendors are following suit. The biggest recent endorsement here is the 7 August 2007 announcement by Motorola of MOTOMAGX its next generation mobile Linux platform. In addition to this huge push for mobile Linux, Motorola has a worldwide series of "Motodev" summits. (MOTOMAGX Release here)

New backing of Linux in the mobile environment has also come from Wind River, which recently joined the LiMo foundation. The foundation hopes to encourage Linux as a mobile phone development platform, and is backed by heavy-hitters in the cell phone industry. (Release here). Of course there are company-centric efforts to make Linux easy-to-use as a mobile device platform, for example:

  • Celunite - Celunite develops and licenses a next-generation mobile software platform based on Linux and other open source innovations.
  • ACCESS - ACCESS Linux Platform™ (ALP) enables the creation of world-class mobile phones and wireless devices by providing an integrated, flexible, and complete Linux platform for mobile device markets worldwide.
  • Trolltech - Qtopia is an application platform for the efficient creation of Linux-based devices.

And there are other initiatives such as Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum , GNOME Mobile and The CE Linux Forum, so it remains to be seen how "standardized" Linux can become as a platform for mobile devices. Code forking, anyone? Finally, if you are into Linux, don't miss the upcoming MontaVista "Vision 2007 Conference" on October 8-10 in Santa Clara, CA. Keynote speakers Jim Ready and Andrew Morton will highlight Linux in applications ranging from the enterprise to mobile phones, addressing real-world issues faced by developers in the trenches.

embedded linux - network / telecom infrastructure
Penguins may, or may not succeed, in the mobile / handset space but Linux is certainly already a huge success in the network infrastructure market. It enjoys substantial backing from hardware manufacturers and excellent offerings from Wind River and MontaVista for hardened, real-time Linux. In this space, Performance Technologies bolstered its hardware and software commitment to Linux via NexusWare® V12, a Linux-based operating system and development environment. The product now supports Performance Technologies’ wide range of single board computer hardware offerings, including both x86 and PowerPC® processor architectures, and operates across the company's entire product line. (Release here).

Wind River paralleled its growing commitment to Linux for mobile with announcements earlier this summer of partnerships with telecom systems and board makers. On August 6, for example, it announced a partnership with Motorola to provide integrated AdvancedTCA® (ATCA®) and MicroTCA™ communication platforms with Carrier Grade Linux and VxWorks runtimes. Release, here.

MontaVista announced MontaVista Application Developer Kit (ADK) 5.0, a major update of its widely-used application development solution. (Release here). And MontaVista partnered with Emerson also in the AdvancedaTCA space, here, showing the close partnerships between Linux vendors and hardware companies. Linux, after all, is a great way to give away software for "free" in order to sell more hardware, services, or tools.

On the multicore front, Concurrent announced a new version of its RedHawk Linux real-time operating system, RedHawk Linux 4.2. supporting the latest Intel quad-core processors for more computing power in smaller, more cost effective, energy efficient packages than previously possible. (Release, here). Virtualization / multi-core is also big in phones; don't miss VirtualLogix, a Silicon Valley start-up focusing on virtualization for embedded and mobile devices. They had a cool presentation at LinuxWorld, here. And, if you want to throw out the whole "communistic, open-source-is-cool thing," to go with hard-core capitalism, check out Microsoft® Embedded. The small Redmond start-up "crashed" LinuxWorld with free food, beer, and Windows® demos for phones and mobile devices. Check out Mike Hall's blog, here.
