EDN recently announced their 34th annual "Microprocessor Directory," aptly subtitled, Different Strokes. The choice of a microprocessor is a nexus of the architecture's technical features, the ecosystem of development tools and services around it, and a gut call about its traction for (your) embedded applications. There are literally "different strokes" for "different folks." Your choice may be quite different from your fellow engineer's. Beyond each architecture's technical feature set is its "tools ecosystem." Here is a look at Power and ARM architectures, with an emphasis on recent announcements and tools.

The Power Architecture community concluded their first-ever Developer Conference in late September. The conference was the coming out party of a major thrust to compete against ARM and revitalize Power beyond its traditional semiconductor partners and applications. A new website (Power.org), a research study on market opportunities, and a solutions catalog of tools round out the underpinnings of an emerging ecosystem of semiconductor and tools partners.
Power remains dominated by the semiconductor vendors; here they are with links to recent news:
The choice of a microprocessor is very much driven by the technical requirements of power, performance, and cost. Probably the most interesting technical announcement in the Power architecture space was Freescale's June 25th announcement of its new "Multi-core Communications Platform," and CoreNet technology, a highly scalable fabric for on-chip connectivity. Details here.
The choice of tools, in contrast, can be a more intimate arrangement as you will live with your development tools and service partner for almost every day of your design cycle. For this, don't miss the Power Architecture Solutions Framework, a new and excellent way to browse available tools and service vendors. Three other good ways to browse tools for Power are Extension Media's Power Architecture Catalog, AMCC's tools catalog, and Freescale's Alliance Member Directory.

Among 32-bit architectures, ARM and its ecosystem are second to none. The practical (yet exciting) news of the recent ARM Developers' Conference centered around Cortex-M3, the first ARM processor based on the ARMv7-M architecture as a high-performance, low-cost platform for a broad range of applications including microcontrollers, automotive body systems, industrial control systems and wireless networking. First to market has been Luminary Micro, now joined by STMicroelectronics with their own Cortex-M3 solution, details here.
STMicroelectronics has not forgotten the importance of robust development tools and easy-to-get, even "fun" evaluation platforms. Don't miss the STM32 Primer, a hand-held evaluation and development tool designed to provide a fun and easy introduction. Its compact, stylized circular design, including a window through which the STM32 chip is visible, is matched with sample applications including two games. Announcement, here. Beyond that STMicro has catalyzed an online development community, STM32Circle.
Among tools vendors STMicro has lined up support from all the major third party vendors. IAR Systems, for example, announced their IAR KickStart Kit for STM32, here. The Swedish tools vendor also pre-announced IAR Embedded Workbench® Version 5 for ARM, a major upgrade to its flagship compiler and debugger, with support for the ARM EABI open standard. This also will make it the first independent tool vendor to support the new ARM Cortex-M1 processor, designed specifically for implementation in FPGAs. Details, here.
A sign of its powerful momentum, ARM has thus even expanded into FPGAs, with a partnership first with Actel and now with Altera. The two companies announced the ARM Cortex-M1 Development Kit, a complete ARM design solution optimized for Altera Cyclone® III Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The kit enables the seamless integration of ARM processor technology with the Altera Cyclone III FPGAs using the Altera Quartus II design software and Altera SOPC Builder tool, together with the ARM RealView® Microcontroller development Kit software development environment. Announcement, here. In addition, ARM has a specific FPGA micro-site, here.
