As an old year closes and a new year dawns, everyone likes lists. Lists of the "best" rock videos of the year, most embarassing political moments, key economic events - yes, even lists of the seven "best" new products for electronic design engineers and programmers. Before we go on to eg3.com's picks of cool (and practical) 2007 new products, don't miss our just-released Insiders' Guide: Selecting an Embedded RTOS. And, coming in February is our Embedded Opportunities guide, which is a massive user survey of the top design trends for 2008, plus interviews, community-choice of leading vendors in key categories like AdvancedTCA, Biometrics, Multi-core, RTOS, Embedded Tools and more!

Amidst the blur of almost eight thousand (!) new product announcements received and over four thousand that we posted to e-clips, here are eg3.com's picks for the best new products of 2007. As always, we emphasize practical technologies for those embedded engineers and programmers developing tomorrow's products today. Here, in random order, are the seven products for 2007 that we feel you should not miss:
- MontaVista® TestDrive - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
-
TestDrive solves your problem of wanting to test and debug Linux on various hardware platforms quickly and easily. The product is a hosted Web service, which builds on MontaVista's tremendous investments in hardware for embedded Linux. TestDrive allows prospective clients an easy way to use the web to - dare we say it - "test drive" embedded Linux. Release here, TestDrive, here.
- Atmel CryptoMemory® - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
- Tired of thieves stealing your intellectual property? Disgusted with employee theft, bad supply chain management, and fake Gucci purses bringing down the price of the real things? Atmel has a solution for you. CryptoMemory® uses a 64-bit embedded hardware encryption engine, four sets of non-readable, 64-bit authentication keys and four sets of non-readable, 64-bit session encryption keys to provide a higher level of protection than products based solely on EEPROM technology. Release here, CryptoMemory®, here.
- STMicroelectronics STM32 Family - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
- Technically, of course, the STM32 is based on the ARM Cortex-M3 and isn't a completely new technology, especially given the pioneering roll of Luminary Micro in the space. But 2007 was when STMicroelectronics validated the architecture in a big way by releasing not only the STM32 family but also a cool STM32 Primer and wonderful STM32 circle user community. Release here, product here.
- Coverity Prevent SQS (SAT engine) - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
-
Software testing and reliability were huge themes in 2007; not surprisingly since the software content and complexity of most embedded projects keep rising! Coverity thus added Boolean satisfiability to their Prevent SQS product. Claims the company: "Unlike current static analysis engines that rely on dataflow analysis and multiple checkers to identify software defects, the SAT engine is based on Boolean satisfiability and will enable multiple Solvers to identify software defects." Release here, product here.
- Dynastream Innovations SensRcore - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
-
Zigbee and related sensor wireless technologies took off in a big way in 2007. It's really a horse race among providers of wireless sensor technologies - hard to pick a clear winner. But the best marketing for sure goes to Dynastream Innovations, which gave away 600 free ANTDKT3 wireless sensor network development kits at the Fall Embedded Systems Conference. Their SensRcore is designed to make wireless sensor network design, easy. Release here, development kit here.
- VirtualLogix, Inc. VLX for Communications Infrastructure - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
- Virtualization was probably the No. 1 hot topic in embedded software for 2007, and no company dominated the headlines better than VirtualLogix. VLX is VirtualLogix's virtualization product that allows multiple operating systems and their respective application software stacks to co-exist and interoperate on the same hardware, and the company is working hard on releasing niche-specific product flavors. Release here, product here.
- Eridon Corporation UnifiedLogic Development Platform - eg3.com "editor's choice 2007"
-
UnifiedLogic Development Platform has been around longer than 2007, but the product caught our eye at the April, 2007, ESC Conference. It's a ground-breaking technology that takes advantage of FPGA and RTOS technology to customize both hardware and software, and on 3 December 2007, the company announced a free trial version for Xilinx Spartan-3 Generation Starter Kit Boards. Release here, product here.
