embedded google search, ee job search ...
Google is the number one search engine for designers, to be sure. But how do your fellow engineers actually use Google? How much time do they spend searching? What else is popular on the Internet? eg3.com has just completed a massive survey and study, for our 2nd edition of Embedded Google Optimization. Here are some highlights. Secondly, what sort of search is more important these days than the "job search?" So we point out some top quality job search strategies, including contract and design work. Finally, it's conference season - so here are our picks for cool conferences in April.

  • job search - finding a job or contract online
  • conference calendar - upcoming conferences of merit

    embedded google - survey results
Google, oh Google. Used by all, but understood by so few... How do engineers really search, and how important is Google in their workaday lives? The short answer: huge. Of the 639 responders to our survey, 47.5% of design engineers spend more than five hours per week on search engines, and 14.65% say that they spend more than five hours per week on web portals. Of their top five sources of design information, four are all Internet-based: search engines, portals, eLetters, and vendor websites. Print? A distant five. Shows? Only a tiny minority actually go to shows.

Just how number one is Google? Fully 65.35% spend more than five hours per week interacting with the search giant (!). Only 7.32% spend that much time with second-place Yahoo. However, the Yahoo number is dramatically larger than last year: Yahoo is gaining in popularity. Try Yahoo for yourself on key searches, and you may find it a better search engine than Google. Another popular search engine is AlltheWeb, and check out this nifty Google vs. Yahoo tool.

How do engineers search? Answer: complexly. The marketing department (when they're not at a trade show) might care about single-words like embedded or rtos or fpga. But designers search for complex two- or three-word phrases like "embedded c tutorial," "embedded c," "embedded system," "embedded dos," "embedded ARM," etc. And engineers often proceed far beyond page one in search results. As you search, therefore, be sure to use the most specific phrase possible and be willing to go deep into results to succeed. Check out the UC Berkeley Search Tutorial to beef up your search skills.

What do engineers want? Short answer: technical content. Datasheets, eval kits, demos, technical papers lead the list of desired content. This is a problem for Google. Do most searches, and your results are clogged with for-sale vendor content - a reason eg3.com tries so hard to organize content by keywords and ferret out the demos, eval kits, white papers, tutorials, and more that make learning easy. If Google could segregate aside for-sale vendor content, it would be much more powerful... To read more about how engineers use Google, you can download the results here - it's free, if you set up a link back to eg3.com. The guide also covers Google optimization and AdWords, so marketers rejoice!

job search - finding a job or contract online
As the world economy teeters towards recession, no search may be more important these days than the job search. Or, if you or your company are looking for contract work, a search for contract jobs. In fact, eg3.com will publish an Insiders' Guide: Embedded Services guide this summer - so if you or your company are in the contract / outsourcing services market, be sure to send us an email info@eg3.com for possible inclusion in the directory.

As for employment, the Internet has a few hidden gems in terms of locating engineering or technical jobs. The best overall job search engine is DICE. Search by keywords via this very technical job engine. Another interesting job search is Indeed.com, which consolidates job postings from many other job sources and allows you to search by keywords and location. If you really think you are hot, try Notchup; they will actually pay you to interview for jobs. Crazy.

Among focused job sites, a few cater to the engineering community such as TechCareers.com, EE Times Career Center, and Engineer.net. Unfortunately, none of the focused sites is as comprehensive and searchable as the major sites like Indeed.com or even the general sites like Monster.com or Hot Jobs.

Beyond permanent employment, finding a contract job is a lot harder. One of the more interesting employment agencies, Embedded Resource Group actually focuses on the embedded design market, and is really worth a look. Plus there are global agencies like Aerotek or Adecco. Check out the excellent overview to contract employment at About.com, here. The best site we've found is Contract Job Hunter as well as Net Temps - if you know of others, please let us know for our research! Again, if you provide contract services or design services, please send us an email at info@eg3.com so we can include you in the forthcoming guide.

conference calendar - upcoming conferences of merit
April is peak conference season for the Spring. What's coming up? The Embedded Systems Conference - the "must attend" mecca of the embedded community - takes over San Jose, beginning 14 April 2008. On the jobs front, this year's event will have a Career Fair plus an Intellectual Property Symposium.

For the Linux gurus, CELF, Embedded Linux Conference will take place 15 April 2008 in Mountain View at the Computer History Museum. And the M2M Forum will take over Paris, 22 April 2008. Finally, Interop, focused on networking and telecommunications, rounds up the month, on 27 April 2008 in Las Vegas, NV. For a complete conference list, search eg3.com, here.
