   eg3 tech choice awards, spring 2008
Everyone loves awards. The problem with existing awards in hi-tech, however, is that they emphasize distant "bleeding edge" technologies and big semiconductor companies to the detriment of smaller, more innovative, and often more useful companies. One might think that the purpose of awards was to have expensive dinners where publicists and ad rep's get to meet with marketers and managers. What about the engineers? What about practical stuff that can help you do your designs, today? Forget dinners and black ties: the Tech Choice Awards are all about practical technologies that you can get your hands on today and build real designs with now. Eat your dinner at your desk: here are the eighteen most important new product announcements of Spring, 2008.

  • tech choice: - imminent, broad, practical
  • tech choice awards: - award winners

FILE SYSTEMS for any application: consumer, industrial, medical, safety-critical!
HCC-Embedded file systems for all processors, peripheral controllers, memory types, toolchains, and OS, if any. With HCC, one size does NOT fit all; there's a system that's right for your CPU, OS, RAM, ROM and performance requirements.
    tech choice awards: - imminent, broad, practical
What technology represents the future? And what future is practical? To find out, the eg3.com editorial staff first identified six of today's most exciting technology areas (virtualization, embedded processors, embedded tools, FPGAs and tools, MicroTCA, and industrial wireless). Within each category, we then selected the three most intriguing new product announcements of the previous six months. These were new products that are:

  • Imminent: coming very soon to deployability;
  • Broad: applicable to a broad range of designs and usages (not for the few, but for the many); and
  • Practical: ones that have eval kits, demos, papers, seminars - ways that practical designers can learn about them and deploy them in their own designs. Not (just) "gee whiz" technologies but "how about that" technologies.

Once we had our eighteen nominees across six technology categories, we then polled our audience to arrive at one "readers' choice" new product for each. Both categories represent the "best of the best" in each technology area. You can download the full list, with product descriptions and links, here or use the "quick list" below.

    conference calendar - upcoming conferences of merit

June fever? Why head to the beach for summer reading? Attend, instead, some of the conferences worldwide that insist that summer is no time for a break from embedded systems. MicroTCA Conference comes to Munich, Germany, on June 3rd. On that same day, however, you can partake of Disney World and attend Microsoft Tech Ed Conference, which for the first time will showcase both their enterprise and embedded offerings in Orlando, FL. Embedded Technology Japan takes place on June 5th in Yokohama, and The Sensors Expo fills the ultra modern Rosemont, IL, convention center on June 8th. Need more Disney? DAC comes to Anaheim on June 8th as well. Gamble away your earnings at NXTcomm in Las Vegas on June 16th. And find out about Freescale's successful reverse IPO at the Freescale Technology Forum on June 16th in Orlando. Why are so many hi-tech events near fantasy parks in June, you ask? We wonder as well.
