Academics at major universities might be clever people. They might even write interesting papers and dissertations on, among other things, online advertising. But let’s be frank. They often have never actually “done” advertising. They don’t have real-world experience, and so their ivory tower credentials can be less than realistic. Academics can talk a lot of theory, but have they had actual practice?

Let’s face it; if you have never done online advertising, there is a whole new world out there that you have to get your head around. You need to know where to advertise so that you target your potential customers, just to begin with. Should you use Google Ads, or should you use Bing? Or Facebook, Or Instagram? Or LinkedIn? Or Pinterest?

You need to know how much to pay per click so that you get the best positions for your ads. How much should you offer per click?

What should your ads say? The content?

The problem with all of this is that, if you are new to this game, reading an academic paper is not going to be any help at all.

But there is an even bigger problem, and that is that, if you try to work all of this out on your own, you can spend a small fortune and only get minimal results. If, indeed, you get any results at all! In fact, you can burn your way through thousands – literally – until you find out the way that works for your particular business.
